A box grater is best for shredding squash.  They are so tender that it takes very little effort.

In fact, smaller squash can be shredded together to save time.

Spin the box grater around and use the other side for slightly larger shreds.


Shred squash when you want it to fade into the background and become more filler than star, as in Grilled Stuffed Mushrooms–Asian Style.  Shredding is an especially useful technique for parents sneaking more veggies into meals for picky eaters.
